Invite a Great Gray Owl into your home!

This beautiful Great Gray Poster was created by world-class, Montana based wildlife photographer, Tom Murphy. As a great supporter of wildlife conservation, Tom and his wife generously gifted these posters to ORI to help further our work and mission.

This photograph was taken in Oct 1988 after the Yellowstone fires. It was the cover photo of the New York Times Magazine that same year which accompanied an article by Peter Mathieson about the fires.

Tom says of the image:

I spent about a week with three great grays south of Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone as they hunted mice and pocket gophers in the burned-over land. This owl has a pocket gopher in its feet. It was sitting on the far end of a pine log burned by the North Fork Fire in early September. I had been photographing it for about 15 minutes watching it sleep and watching it all around. Then there was a sound behind me and it was afraid I was going to take its gopher away so it mantled it then flew off into the forest.

Tom is most well known for his Yellowstone photography, a muse that has produced countless moving images and largely defined his work. He is the author of The Seasons in Yellowstone,  a four part series of national acclaim. In addition to his own photography, Tom leads instructive seminars and was the first person licensed to lead photography tours in Yellowstone Park. He started his business to give back to wildlife and wild lands and aid in their preservation. He donates the use of his photography to environmental groups in support their efforts. ORI is honored to partner with Tom as we work to protect North American owls.

This 30: x 22" poster is printed on thick, high quality paper.

PLEASE NOTE: these photos do not do the image justice! The border is a rich marine-blue and the crisp image captures the charred log, the softness of feathers, the intensity in the eyes. It is a beautiful poster, beautifully formatted. It looks incredible in a frame behind glass or pinned to your wall. You won't be dissappointed!
